It was a great weekend of racing at the GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville North Carolina. With a heavy threat for rain in the forecast for Friday practice the weather actually cooperated for most of the day with plenty of dry practice time in preparation for the second round of the WKA Manufacturers Cup.

Madison Campeau had a career weekend in the Yamaha Sportsman class after running well in Daytona in late December. Madison started out the weekend qualifying on the front row Saturday. Driving her Comet Racing Engines Yamaha on a Top Kart, Madison was in the mix in both heat races to line up in the first two rows for the Final. Leading on the last lap Madison had a great dual for the win to come up short by only .005 of a second (a couple inches) at the line to pick up a career best 2nd place finish. Garrett Adams on an FA Kart with Comet Racing Engines Yamaha had a great run to finish 6th and pick up the fastest race lap in the Final.

Hoping to carry the momentum of as great run the previous day, Madison was only 16th in Qualifying but using the progressive heats and great race craft Madison would start inside the top ten for Sunday’s Final. Working the draft and making some great passes Madison worked her way up to finish an impressive 4th in the Final.

Yamaha Senior produced some of the best racing of the weekend. Jake Donald on the Praga and Nick Landi on an FA Kart started out the weekend strong for Comet Racing Engines by sweeping the front row in qualifying. As always in the Yamaha classes, it was a close race with the top five nose to tail for the entire race, coming to the line Landi would end up a couple feet short of the win to finish 2nd and Jake Donald crossing the line in 4th.

Sunday in Yamaha Senior started with another good qualifying performance with Landi taking the pole. The Final was a race that could go down in history as one of the wildest Yamaha Senior finishes of all time! The lead changed hands multiple times among a six kart race for the win, tire smoke flying, karts sideways, passes through the grass! When the smoke cleared (and there was smoke) Jake Donald and Nick Landi swept the first two spots for Comet Racing Engines!

Jake Donald also had a strong weekend in the IAME Senior class with his Comet X30 engine. Saturday Jake ran in the top 3 most of the day and slipped to 4th with a couple laps to go to finish 4th. Sunday Jake had a great run in qualifying to start on the front row in second. In the Final Jake would collect another 4th place finish on the Praga.

Yamaha Junior featured some young but impressive Junior drivers with Zach Pretorius qualifying and running in the top 5 during the weekend at his first ever race at the Mooresville facility. Zach would collect a couple 8th place finishes during the weekend. Margay driver Spike Kohlbecker continued to find speed all weekend to collect two top ten finishes and Matt Miller on an FA Kart continued to improve all weekend as he makes his transition from Four Cycle to Two Cycle karts.

“I was really happy with our weekend,” said Mark Dismore Jr. with Comet Kart Sales. “We have worked like crazy the last few months on the dyno and track testing our engines and the hard work continues to pay off with great finishes and fast engines. I only see things continuing in that direction, we have no plans on taking our foot off the gas!”

Comet Racing Engines engine builder and team driver coach Gary Lawson views on the event, “I was very impressed with our drivers this weekend! Our young racers continue to show great speed and are very receptive to coaching. The improvement from the beginning to end of each event is particularly encouraging. I know our drivers have lofty goals for this season once we get to some familiar tracks and I’m excited to be a part of the process.”
