Even though the WKA Daytona Kart Week takes place at the end of the year, everyone knows it is the unofficial beginning of the new karting season! Team Comet made the trek to the Daytona International Speedway ready to hit the ground running.

New for this year’s race was the addition of the Briggs LO206 Senior and Junior classes. The popularity of the LO206 was evident with the Senior class boasting the second most karts of any class at the Manufacturers Cup with 40 karts on track! Florida racer Corey Towles was the man to beat on his Comet Eagle kart taking the pole on Raceday 1, sweeping both heats and winning the final!

On Race Day 2 Corey had a dominant win, checking out in the final by almost 6 seconds on his Eagle! Corey had company on the podium with Eric Fagan also on an Eagle in second with Michael Greiner in 6th and Evan Cowan in 10th to put 4 Eagle’s in the Top 10.

Nick Landi was fast all weekend in Yamaha Senior with his Comet Racing Engines KT100 on an FA Kart. On Race Day 1 with the white flag flying Nick took his shot at the lead but the move didn’t stick and with the momentum lost he slipped back to 4th at the checkered flag. Knowing that he had a shot at the win only made Nick more determined for Race Day 2 and Nick made his move a lap earlier taking the lead with two laps to go, Nick defended successfully taking the win in Yamaha Senior!

AJ Myers had the speed in Pro IAME Senior but not the luck. After qualifying 3rd on his Comet Racing Engines X30 powered iKart, AJ crossed the stripe in 2nd for Heat 1. Starting outside the front row for Heat 2 AJ was clobbered at the start and had to claw his way through the pack. Unfortunately the start of the final wasn’t any better with Myers once again caught up in a first corner mess but fought back to a 7th place finish in the 47 kart strong field. Praga driver Jacob Donald was 6th with his Comet X30.

Madison Campeau had a strong run in the Yamaha Sportsman class with a 2nd and 3rd in the heat races and a 4th in the final while setting fastest lap on her Top Kart with Comet Racing Engines KT100. Matt Miller was a top 10 kart all weekend in Yamaha Junior as he continues his transition from 4 cycle to 2 cycle. Jack Dorsey at his first Daytona WKA race had an impressive 10th place finish on Race Day 2 in Yamaha Junior. David Kalb Jr. had a top ten in Pro IAME Junior with his FA Kart and Comet X30. Elliott Cox had a couple top ten finishes on the new iKart Cadet in Mini Swift class with a 10th and an 8th as he steadily improved over the weekend.

Looking back at the weekend Mark Dismore Jr. from Comet Kart Sales remarked, “I’m really proud of how well we ran at Daytona. It’s always a tough race, passing is always hard on this track. We had the speed in multiple classes and that’s what’s important, you can’t control a lot of the things that happen on track all you can do is put out competitive karts and engines and let the chips fall where they may. I’m really looking forward to 2016 and the future for this team looks excellent.”

Coming on board at the beginning of December, multi-time WKA and Rock Island Grand Prix champion Gary Lawson was on hand in Daytona for chassis and engine tuning as well as driver coaching. Lawson stated, “I was proud of the effort from all of our drivers. Some were fast from the first practice and others made significant gains throughout the event. The Comet engines ran well in all classes and the Eagle kart made a big splash onto the national scene in what was the largest Briggs LO206 field in the United States to date. I’m already looking forward to working with our talented group of drivers at the next race.”
